Case Study

Due to a long-term condition I had to give up my nursing career and was retired on medical grounds. I did not have paid employment for 9 years. Volunteering became part of my life, and I called it my work. Grampian Opportunities ran a Go to Work Club which I attended for 12 weeks. The course was inspiring as it covered so many areas that were relevant in seeking employment. The session that stood out for me was an arranged visit to an employer. It then became noticeably clear to me that paid employment was possible. One thing that the employer made clear was a small number of hours was feasible. This changed my way of thinking and gave me hope as I knew that I would now be able to search for work. I honestly believe that I would not have been working today if I had gone through the normal channels. By the time my health improved my confidence required attention, and I lacked knowledge in information technology/ computer skills as most jobs now require this. The support I received from Grampian opportunities turned my life around, I now have a future to look forward to.
